Survey Reveals Nearly 25% of Teens in Buenos Aires Engage in Online Gambling

The Rising Tide of Online Gambling Among Teens in Buenos Aires: A Call for Action

A recent survey conducted by the Defensoría del Pueblo de la Ciudad (DPC) has shed light on a troubling trend in Buenos Aires City: nearly one in every four secondary school students has engaged in online gambling. This statistic, revealing that 24 percent of teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 have placed bets online, raises serious concerns about the implications for youth well-being in a digital age.

Scope of the Problem

The survey, which included responses from 2,765 students across 25 schools, highlights that the phenomenon is not only prevalent but alarming in its intensity. A concerning 8.8 percent of teenagers admitted to betting frequently, indicating a potential for addiction. Roxana Perazza, the director general of the DPC’s Derecho al Desarrollo Humano team, emphasized that “with this specific knowledge, we can start making better prevention policies to solve a problem that is both complex and dramatic.”

Socioeconomic Neutrality of Gambling

The data indicates that online gambling does not discriminate based on socioeconomic status. As Perazza pointed out, "Online betting is a crosswise phenomenon in terms of the socio-economic position of households." This means that students from various backgrounds are equally likely to engage in gambling, a factor that complicates the development of targeted intervention strategies.

Gender and Age Dynamics

While both genders participate in online gambling, the survey revealed a stark gender disparity. A significant 71 percent of those who gamble are male, compared to only 25 percent female; 4 percent identified as non-binary or chose not to specify their gender. Moreover, the temptation to gamble seems to escalate as students advance in their education: only 13 percent of first-year secondary students reported gambling, a figure that surged to 30 percent among fifth-year students.

Recognizing Gambling as an Addiction

Many students do not merely gamble for entertainment; they view it as a means of income. Alarmingly, a quarter of the surveyed students admitted struggle to cease betting, even upon winning. This propensity to gamble mirrors addictive behaviors seen in other forms of compulsive conduct, further underscoring the need for proactive measures.

Types of Gambling Activities

The survey also investigated the types of gambling activities that attract these youths. Almost half (47.8 percent) reported playing casino games, while 32.3 percent engaged in sports betting. Notably, a gender divide persists: 59.9 percent of female respondents preferred casino games, while 37.6 percent of males were drawn to sports betting.

Motivations Behind Online Gambling

Understanding why teenagers are increasingly turning to online gambling is critical for addressing the issue effectively. Researchers discovered that the primary motivations include “making money” (67 percent) and “having fun.” Teens perceive betting as a quick and easy way to earn cash, enabling them to afford outings and enjoy a semblance of financial independence. One-fourth cite gambling as simply a source of amusement, highlighting how it can be mistakenly trivialized as a leisure activity.

Influence of Social Networks

The survey also explored how teens are becoming acquainted with online gambling platforms. A staggering 73.1 percent indicated they found these sites through friends or relatives, while over 25 percent discovered them via social media influencers or advertisements. This suggests that peer influence and marketing strategies significantly contribute to the normalization of gambling among youths.

Response from Authorities

In the wake of these alarming findings, the DPC has taken preventive steps to mitigate the issue. Notifications have been issued to gambling sites and banks about the use of virtual wallets by minors. Furthermore, recommendations were made to Argentina’s Central Bank to monitor transactions involving accounts used by minors, thereby curbing their access to online gambling platforms.

Additionally, the Buenos Aires City government has recently reported 16 influencers who promote gambling games on social media, seeking to hold them accountable for targeting a vulnerable audience.

The Role of Education and Family

The ongoing discussion surrounding this issue emphasizes the vital role of education and family dynamics. Contrary to widespread belief, only 9.9 percent of the gambling took place at school; almost 48 percent occurred at home. This indicates that parents and guardians must be equipped with the knowledge and tools to recognize and address gambling issues effectively.

The DPC suggests improving regulations to discourage online betting among teenagers and calls for social responsibility from the private sector. Enhanced state control and oversight of gambling platforms are considered essential measures to protect youths from the predatory nature of online gambling.

A Call for Awareness and Action

The landscape of online gambling among Buenos Aires’ youth presents a multifaceted challenge that requires collaborative efforts from schools, families, and regulatory bodies. While the findings of the DPC’s survey are sobering, they also provide a crucial foundation for developing strategies to combat this pervasive issue. As the digital age evolves, it becomes increasingly essential to foster an environment where young people can thrive without the temptations and hazards of online gambling.

In a world where instant gratification can lead to long-term consequences, societal awareness and proactive intervention are imperative. Only then can we hope to protect the next generation from the shadows of gambling addiction.
