On April 2, 2024, the Tropicana officially closed its doors, just shy of its 67th anniversary. The decision sparked a wave of nostalgia among fans and patrons who had cherished their experiences within its storied walls. As demolition commenced shortly thereafter, it became clear that the Tropicana was not merely a casino; it was a chapter in the grand narrative of Las Vegas history.
A Mobster’s Playground
The Tropicana was born out of the ambitious mind of “Dandy” Phil Kastel, who had ties to notorious mob figures like Frank Costello. Despite Kastel’s claims to the contrary, it soon became apparent that organized crime had a hand in the casino’s operations. Shortly after its opening, the Nevada Gaming Control Board refused to license Kastel due to his associations with mobsters, which forced him to step back from running the casino.
The intertwining of the Tropicana and the mob would not end there; in 1978, the casino became embroiled in a major scandal involving skimming by employees linked to the Kansas City Mafia. This led to a five-year FBI investigation known as Operation Strawman, revealing a widespread network of corruption that further clouded the Tropicana’s reputation.

Debuting December 24, 1959, the lavish revue featured stunning showgirls and glamorous performances that captivated audiences for nearly five decades. As the last of the grand showgirl productions faded into memory, the Tropicana remained a beloved part of the entertainment scene that helped define Las Vegas.
Iconic Moments and Celebrities
Throughout its storied history, the Tropicana welcomed a host of celebrities, from Elizabeth Taylor to Elvis Presley. Taylor’s whirlwind romance with Eddie Fisher—culminating in a hasty wedding ceremony just hours after his divorce from Debbie Reynolds—unfolded at the Tropicana, adding to its allure.
Additionally, Sammy Davis Jr. made a significant mark on the casino, not only performing as part of the legendary Rat Pack but also becoming the first Black man to own a share in a Las Vegas resort when he purchased an 8% stake in 1972.
The Final Curtain
After years of glory, the Tropicana officially bid farewell in April 2024, with its demolition commencing shortly thereafter. By October 9, 2024, the remaining structures, the Paradise Tower and Club Tower, met their end through a spectacular controlled demolition, signifying the conclusion of the Tropicana’s storied past.
As plans move forward for a new baseball stadium for the Oakland Athletics, as well as a hotel and casino resort, the Tropicana’s legacy will remain woven into the fabric of Las Vegas history.
