Dutch Mental Health Organization Advocates for Complete Ban on Online Gambling Ads

The Call for a Ban on Online Gambling Advertising in the Netherlands

The Dutch Association of Mental Health and Addiction Care (De Nederlandse ggz) is intensifying its campaign against the exposure of online gambling advertising, advocating for an outright ban. This initiative comes in light of rising concerns regarding addiction, especially among younger demographics and vulnerable individuals.

Current Regulations on Gambling Advertising

In July 2023, the Netherlands implemented a partial ban on gambling advertising, restricting its presence in traditional media outlets such as television, radio, and print, as well as in public spaces. This legislation sought to mitigate the potential harms of gambling exposure, particularly to minors. However, a significant loophole remains: targeted ads can still appear on streaming platforms, social media, and in online gaming environments, albeit with the stipulation that they must not appeal to minors.

Risks of Targeted Advertising to Youth

Ruth Peetoom, chair of De Nederlandse ggz, expressed grave concerns regarding this targeted marketing approach. She emphasizes that young people, who are particularly susceptible to addiction risks, are disproportionately affected by the normalization of gambling behavior fostered by these marketing strategies. “The younger people find gambling normal, the greater the chance of problematic gambling later in life,” stated Peetoom.

Recent data from the Dutch gambling authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), indicates a troubling trend: individuals aged 18 to 23 accounted for 22% of online gambling accounts as of late 2023. This statistic underscores the growing prevalence of online gambling among youth and adds urgency to the discussions around the regulation of its advertising.

Mental Health Implications

Evidence from LADIS, the national alcohol and drugs database, further supports Peetoom’s assertion. The database reported that 2,456 individuals sought treatment for gambling addiction in 2023, marking a notable year-over-year increase. This rise raises alarms about the ongoing mental health crisis linked to gambling, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring and intervention strategies.

Peetoom specifically criticized the tactics employed by gambling operators, which are eerily reminiscent of strategies used by the tobacco industry. Social media influencers promoting “free money” and quick gambling wins on platforms like TikTok and Snapchat attract young audiences, exposing them to the allure of gambling at an impressionable age. “Young people are very sensitive to stimuli such as ‘fast money’ and are influenced by role models,” Peetoom explained.

Advocating for Stricter Regulations

In addition to advocating for a comprehensive ban on online gambling advertising, De Nederlandse ggz is also pressing for higher standards of duty of care from gambling operators. Peetoom insists that the KSA should enforce stricter compliance measures. “The rules regarding the duty of care of gambling providers must also be formulated more strictly. Supervision of problematic gambling must improve,” she insisted.

This call for regulatory reform aligns with growing concerns over the safeguarding of young and vulnerable individuals in the digital age. The normalization of gambling through targeted marketing not only poses addiction risks but also jeopardizes the mental health landscape for countless individuals.

Conclusion

As discussions surrounding gambling regulations unfold, the voices urging for change are becoming louder. De Nederlandse ggz’s advocacy for a full prohibition on online gambling advertising echoes the sentiments of many concerned citizens, parents, and health professionals. The need for an inclusive dialogue on the impact of gambling advertising on society, especially among the youth, is critical in shaping effective policy responses that prioritize mental health and well-being. The balancing act between promoting personal freedoms and protecting vulnerable populations continues to challenge regulators, but the ultimate goal must be the welfare of the community.
