Rich Alsup: A Rising Star in the World of Poker
Rich Alsup may not be a household name among casual fans of poker, but anyone familiar with the scene knows that the Minnesota native has established himself as a major player with impressive accomplishments and a relentless drive. With over $2.4 million in lifetime earnings and a WSOP gold bracelet to his name, his journey in the poker world is indeed remarkable.
Early Success and Mid-States Poker Tour Dominance
Alsup’s journey through the poker circuit kicked into high gear with his triumph in the 2022 World Series of Poker, where he took home $272,065 after winning Event #82: $800 NLH Deep Stack. This victory didn’t just earn him a substantial financial reward, but also a coveted WSOP gold bracelet, cementing his status as one of the top contenders in the game.
In addition to his WSOP success, Alsup has left an indelible mark on the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT). His accolades include winning the 2015 MSPT Meskwaki for $101,229 and finishing as the Season 6 Player of the Year. With his total cashes amounting to an astonishing $963,973, he has become the tour’s all-time money leader. With 52 all-time MSPT Main Event cashes and 15 final table appearances, Alsup possesses an impressive poker resume. He’s also recognized as a MSPT Hall of Famer, ranking second on the tour’s Greatest of All Time (GOAT) list—a testament to his sustained excellence over the years.
Surprisingly, despite his significant achievements, Alsup still seeks a title from the World Poker Tour (WPT), a goal he is determined to achieve.
A Kid at the Playground
Alsup’s recent poker endeavors have taken him to the Playground in Montreal, a venue he first visited back in 2018. During his third trip to this renowned poker destination, he was enamored by the vibrant atmosphere and top-notch culinary offerings. "Montreal is amazing. The people are very kind. The food is 10 out of 10, wherever you go," he expressed in an interview with PokerNews.
He even brought along his good friend, fellow Minnesotan Rob Wazwaz, who now considers it one of his favorite poker spots. The camaraderie and connection among poker players, including randomly encountering MSPT Hall of Famer Umut Ozturk, further enriched their visit.
Both Alsup and Wazwaz made Day 2 of the WPT Playground Championship, but frustratingly, they both fell short of the money. Despite this setback, Alsup maintained a positive attitude, viewing the experience as part of the learning process inherent in the game.
Triumph at the Fall Poker Classic
Right on the heels of his Playground endeavors, Alsup recently achieved significant success during the 2024 Fall Poker Classic held at Canterbury Park. This esteemed Minnesota tournament recorded an impressive $742,080 prize pool, well exceeding its $200,000 guarantee. As one of the most prestigious tournaments in the region—one that Alsup had long aspired to win—he managed to secure the victory amidst stiff competition.
“We actually did a three-way chop and then we played out for $30,000… To ship the most prestigious hometown title was nice,” Alsup fondly recalled about the tournament. His first-place finish netted him $117,775, further solidifying his place as one of Minnesota’s top poker players.

What’s Next for Rich Alsup?
With his eyes set on new goals, Alsup’s immediate plans include hitting the cash game scene post-WPT Playground Championship. However, the overarching ambition driving him forward is to finally secure that elusive World Poker Tour title.
"That’s really the main thing left on the bucket list," he stated candidly about his aspirations. He has come close, finishing 11th for $111,035 at the 2021 WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown, but he is eager for a chance to etch his name on the Mike Sexton Champion’s Cup.
He plans to participate in several upcoming tournaments, including the WPT Seminole Rock ‘N’ Roll Poker Open Championship and potentially the WPT World Championship, underscoring his commitment to achieving his goal.
As Alsup continues to navigate the competitive waters of professional poker, he is adamant about making his mark in the WPT. With his remarkable track record and passion for the game, it’s only a matter of time before he achieves that dream.
