Ontario Gambling Figures Increase Despite Decline in Sports Betting

Ontario’s Booming Digital Sports Betting and Online Casino Revenue: Insights from Q2 2024

Ontario’s online gambling market continues its upward trajectory, as digital sports betting and online casino revenues reached new heights in the second quarter of 2024. According to the latest report from iGaming Ontario, the province saw an impressive total handle of CA$18.7 billion ($13.5 billion/£10.4 billion/€12.5 billion) across all platforms. This marked not only the highest amount wagered since the launch of digital sports betting and online gambling in April 2022 but also showcased a steady increase from the previous quarter.

A Record-Breaking Quarter for Gambling in Ontario

The numbers tell a compelling story of growth, with the second quarter’s handle surpassing that of the first quarter of 2024 by 1.6% and soaring 31.7% compared to the same quarter last year. This upward trend highlights the increasing popularity and acceptance of digital gambling among Ontarians. The reported handle, however, does not account for promotional deductions, and iGaming Ontario has not disclosed specific hold or individual operator numbers, keeping the focus on overall performance.

Throughout the quarter, the competitive landscape featured fifty-three operators and eighty-three platforms offering a wide variety of gambling options to consumers. This diverse offering is likely contributing to the enhanced engagement and increased betting activity seen in the province.

Casino Games: The Star of the Show

Delving deeper into the figures, the online casino segment emerged as a significant player within the gambling scene, contributing a staggering CA$16 billion in total bets placed. This sector alone generated gaming revenue amounting to CA$738 million, marking a remarkable 35.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023. The various formats of casino gaming—including slots, live and digital table games, and peer-to-peer bingo—continue to draw substantial interest from players.

When comparing this quarter to Q1 of 2024, the amounts bet increased by 1.7%, and operator revenue also saw a significant boost from CA$407 million to CA$553 million in Q2 2023. The continuous revenue growth within the online casino sector reflects not only consumer preference for these gaming options but also ongoing innovation and improvement in the gaming experience by operators.

Sports Betting: A Slight Dip but Still Strong

On the sports betting front, the handle was reported at CA$2.2 billion, translating to an operator revenue of CA$167 million. Although both the handle and revenue from sports betting witnessed a slight decline from the first quarter, the overall sports betting market remains robust. As sports betting continues to develop, operators may need to refine their strategies to recapture the momentum observed in previous quarters.

Active engagement is reflected in the statistics, with an average spend per player calculated at CA$308 and approximately 1.32 million active play accounts reported during the quarter. This active participation underscores the growing allure of online gambling in Ontario.

Peer-to-Peer Betting: A New Trend Gaining Traction

Additionally, the peer-to-peer betting platform accounted for CA$417 million in bets, yielding CA$18 million in gaming revenue. This emerging segment demonstrates the evolving gambling landscape, where players can engage directly with each other, adding an extra layer of excitement and competition to the overall betting experience.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for iGaming in Ontario

Overall, Ontario’s digital sports betting and online casino market showcased remarkable growth during the second quarter of 2024, affirming its position as a burgeoning titan in the iGaming industry. While online casinos dominated both betting volume and revenue share, sports betting remains a critical component of the market, even if it experienced a slight dip this quarter.

As the industry continues to develop, it will be fascinating to observe how operators adapt to changing consumer behaviors and technological advancements. With clear growth trends, enhanced player engagement, and a continually increasing range of options, the future of iGaming in Ontario looks more promising than ever.
