The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) recently released its September data report, shedding light on significant fluctuations in the state’s gaming revenues. A Year-Over-Year Decline in Brick-and-Mortar Casinos

September marks a notable period for Pennsylvania’s casinos as they experienced a slowdown in revenues compared to the previous year. The PGCB reported that gross gaming revenue (GGR) from retail slot machines totaled nearly $197 million, reflecting a decline of 1.5% year-over-year. Additionally, table games saw a similar downturn, with generated revenues reaching $73.4 million, a decrease of approximately 2.3%.

Combining these figures, the total in-person casino gambling revenue fell to $270.4 million—a decline of 1.7%, translating to a loss of $4.7 million from the prior year. This dip aligns with trends observed in neighboring New Jersey, where Atlantic City casinos also reported a drop in in-person revenues. Analysts attribute this decline partly to the calendar differences, as September 2023 boasted an extra Friday and Saturday, the peak days for casino activity.

Online Gaming: A Silver Lining

Despite the setbacks in brick-and-mortar casinos, the online gaming sector provided a substantial counterbalance. The decline in retail revenues was markedly overshadowed by the robust performance of iGaming and mobile sports wagering platforms.

In September, GGR from online slots and interactive table games, excluding poker rake, totaled an impressive $174.5 million. This figure indicates a significant surge of 11% year-over-year, marking an increase of about $17.4 million. The primary contributors to this growth were online slots, which have seen rising popularity among players.

Sports betting, too, played a pivotal role in this online success. The revenue generated from sports wagering reached $53.5 million, showcasing a remarkable 46% increase. This surge can be attributed, in part, to the commencement of the NFL season, which typically draws considerable betting activity.

Moreover, slot-like video gaming terminals (VGTs) within diesel truck stops contributed around $3.4 million to the overall state gaming revenue, representing a modest 3.6% increase.

However, losses were also noted in specific areas: online poker rake fell to $2.2 million—a decrease of 7%—and fantasy sports fees dipped to $1.9 million, nearly a 5% decline.

Despite challenges in certain segments, the overall state gaming industry thrived, winning $505.87 million from gamblers in September—a commendable growth of 6.2%.

Spotlight on Leading Casinos: Parx Retains Its Crown

Parx Casino, situated just north of Philadelphia, continues to be a frontrunner in Pennsylvania’s gaming scene. Renowned for being smoke-free, Parx attracted players seeking a comfortable environment to enjoy their gaming experiences. In September, the casino reported $30.2 million in slot revenues, outpacing its competitors. Wind Creek Bethlehem followed closely behind, earning $24.2 million.

Interestingly, when it came to table games, Wind Creek led with nearly $18 million, while Parx garnered $15.5 million. This highlights the competitive nature of the gaming market in the state, with casinos vying for player patronage.

On the online gaming front, Penn Entertainment dominated the iGaming sector with GGR reaching $47.2 million through its Hollywood Casino operations allied with the ESPN Bet sportsbook. Boyd Gaming’s FanDuel iGaming operation followed at $33.7 million, demonstrating the growing significance of online platforms.

In sports gambling, Valley Forge’s FanDuel Sportsbook emerged as the leader, raking in total revenues of $27.3 million, with over $26.6 million stemming from its online operations. Hollywood’s ESPN Bet, with combined retail and mobile revenue of $18.8 million, further underscores the escalating competitiveness in this space.
