"I first encountered poker while playing online computer games," he recalls, "and didn’t really understand what I was doing." Yet, the combination of strategy and psychology captivated him, drawing him deeper into the world of poker.
His first taste of live poker came at age 19 during university. A visit to the Hippodrome Casino led to an exhilarating win of £83 in just 10 minutes, igniting a passion for the game. Soon after, he won a regular £40 tournament at Aspers Casino, establishing this venue as his proving ground for tournaments and cash games, where he has since cultivated a growing bankroll.

As a British-Indian player of Gujarati descent, he has faced prejudice in a predominantly white poker community. “There’s a stigma with Indian players,” he shares, reflecting on the verbal and non-verbal aggression he’s encountered at the tables. “We’re often seen as weak players.”
However, despite the obstacles, Patel is determined to change perceptions and inspire Indian players to compete at the highest level. "I hope I can help change that," he asserts, recognizing the need for greater representation within the poker community.
Despite these stumbling blocks, Patel maintains a grounded perspective. While he dreams of pursuing poker professionally, he acknowledges the importance of balancing this aspiration with his real-world commitments: "A large bankroll, owning property, other income streams—that kind of thing."

"My entire poker knowledge to date has been self-taught," he explains, emphasizing his independent approach to learning. He engages relentlessly with more experienced players, utilizes online resources, and constantly refines his strategies, showcasing a commitment to self-improvement.

Patel’s journey reached a crucial milestone during the WPT Australia Championship, where he won a package to enter through a £700 satellite at Aspers. Prior to the event, he strategically traveled to Singapore to prepare mentally and physically for the tournament. "I spent a few days there to relax and make sure I wasn’t jet-lagged," he recalls, highlighting his meticulous approach.
After navigating the early stages of the tournament smoothly, a pivotal moment occurred on Day 3, where he lost a massive hand with pocket kings against pocket queens. Despite this setback, Patel remained cool under pressure, eventually grinding his way to an impressive sixth-place finish: “I just managed to grind a short stack, get some ladders, and finish in sixth.” This demonstrated his maturity and ability to adapt to adverse situations.
Looking Ahead: Future Aspirations and Legacy
Patel’s success at WPT Australia was a significant validation of his hard work and dedication. "The money is a great boost as I look to my long-term future—invest in property and so on," he shares. While he remains committed to his career in finance, Patel intends to keep poker as a significant part of his life, expressing an eagerness to participate in more major tournaments worldwide.
Now more aware of and engaged with the poker community, Patel expresses interest in coaching to elevate both his game and help younger players in the poker arena. "I want to coach young beginners and amateur players, helping them become consistent winners at the small stakes," he reveals.
